Nashvillian, volunteer veteran, and event planner extraordinaire Emily Green is joining the Doing Good team as a Podcast Co-Host. With a passion for volunteerism, and a keen interest in podcasting, another Doing Good volunteer encouraged Emily to blend the two together by podcasting with us.
Emily’s volunteer journey began as a high school requirement. She volunteered at a retirement community, keeping the residents company. In college, she joined a volunteer “fraternity” which served many different causes. After graduating, she worked for a nonprofit in California that aided many different countries in East Africa. There, she planned fundraising events with live music and other forms of entertainment for the communities. This is where Emily found her knack for event planning. Currently, Emily is doing more “one-off” volunteering, working with different organizations for different events.
One thing Emily has found with volunteering is that no matter which service she is providing, she gains more perspective from each one.
Emily confesses that in her teen years, “volunteering wasn’t always at the top of my list as something I wanted to do on a saturday afternoon, but I always did it because I knew the moment I got there… I’m there to support them, and they can just show up as they are… That brought a lot into perspective for me, especially during that time in my life.”
Emily has found herself touched by how grateful others are for her help, whether she is planning a fundraiser event, or keeping someone company at a nursing home.
As the new co-host for our Doing Good podcast, Emily is excited to meet different people with different backgrounds who are all connected by the passion of serving others.
“There’s something really special about being able to talk to one specific person and hear what their motivation is, what is important to them, why volunteering for this specific organization is important to them.”
Volunteers take hours out of their lives to serve, and Emily is eager to hear what is beneath the surface of their actions. The stories, the inspiration, and the events of their lives that led them to their cause.
