Jimmy Pitts is an example of the age-old saying – life is what you make of it.
Jimmy is an advocate for Smyrna youth day in and day out. Between coaching basketball and serving on the corporate board of the Boys and Girls Club of Rutherford County, Jimmy constantly looks to improve the lives of those around him. The work of the Boys and Girls Club shows a different face of volunteerism: focusing on the next generation and surrounding them with positive influence in their most formative years.
He grew up involved with another Boys and Girls Club chapter playing basketball, baseball, soccer, and football. Sports showed Jimmy the importance of strong values. His constant pursuit of sports has followed him throughout his life.
When Smyrna created its first Boys and Girls Club chapter, Jimmy saw the opportunity to give back to his community. In late 2010, he became involved with its sports program and has been coaching since. However, his love for others outshines his passion for sports. His involvement with the Boys and Girls Club is not focused on sharing his love for sports, rather an attempt to surround Smyrna youth with positive values during their formative years.
People like Jimmy change communities for the better by encouraging the next generation and setting an example for other volunteers. Volunteers can always make a difference; the question is what difference will we make?
