Ami McConnell: Lifelong Love of Books and Service

For Ami McConnell, reading has always been more than a pastime—it’s a lifelong passion that shaped her career and inspired her volunteer journey. With an extensive background in publishing, Ami could have easily filled her time with professional responsibilities. Yet from the very beginning, she sought ways to use her talents for good.

Her first volunteer project was with a literacy agency shortly after the birth of her first child. She helped raise funds by editing a cookbook, combining her editorial skills with her love of books. That experience set the tone for a life of service centered around the written word.

A turning point came when Ami attended the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, an event she has cherished for decades. There, her friend Carolyn Wilson—a librarian and devoted volunteer—encouraged her to join the Nashville chapter of Women’s National Book Association (WNBA). Through Nashville WNBA, Ami found a vibrant community of women united by their love of literature and commitment to literacy.

Founded in 1917, WNBA was created to give women professionals a voice in the book world when they were excluded from other associations. Today, the Nashville chapter carries on that mission by gathering members for monthly programs, celebrating the written word at events like the Southern Festival of Books, and serving the community through initiatives such as book drives and building libraries for local women’s prisons.

Ami’s leadership has also sparked innovation. In 2018, she founded WriterFest, a unique conference for writers of books, songs, and film. Inspired by Nashville’s collaborative spirit, WriterFest connects creatives across disciplines, offering inspiration and practical support. “Writers are my heroes,” Ami says. “I wanted to gather them to inspire, empower, and connect them with the people who help them in their careers.”

When asked what drives her, Ami points to Carolyn Wilson, whose volunteerism introduced her to her very first author—an encounter that shaped her career and life. “She changed my world,” Ami reflects. “Now, when I connect others with authors and opportunities, I feel like I’m following in her footsteps.”

Today, Ami is excited about the fresh energy younger members are bringing into WNBA Nashville. With more people eager to serve and support literacy, she sees a bright future for the organization. Through her work with WNBA and WriterFest, Ami continues to honor her love of books by building a stronger, more connected community of readers and writers.
